 Mike Turner

Title/Description:  Senior DB2, DBMS Instructor

Email:  Available on request

History:  Mike has more than 30 years experience of working with database management systems. In the early 1970s he worked on the development of database management software. He later provided technical support and training for a DBMS software vendor in Europe. After a period working as an in-house database consultant for a major chemical company, he became an independent database consultant and trainer in 1980.

DB2 for z/OS Experience

Mike has studied DB2 for z/OS and its System/R prototype since 1979, and has worked with it hands-on since 1989. He has undertaken many DB2 consultancy assignments, particularly in the area of performance tuning and disaster recovery planning. He regularly presents training courses on DB2. These include Application and System Performance Tuning, Application Data Recovery, and System Recovery and Restart. Mike is co-author of the IBM Redbook 'DB2 for z/OS and OS/390 Version 7 Performance Topics' (SG24-6129).

Mike has set up a DBA team for the European operation of a major US multinational company. He provided both development and production DBA support while training the permanent staff to take over the role. He provided consultancy on DB2 performance tuning.

Mike worked as part of a team planning and implementing DB2 Data Sharing at a major bank in England. His main responsibility was to develop and implement a plan to test most types of failure and recovery in a Data Sharing environment. These tests identified the operational problems that would have to be managed in a real-life failure. Mike developed and presented training courses on DB2 Data Sharing for Operations and DBA personnel and developed Data Sharing Recovery guidelines for DBAs on call.

Mike also worked at IBM’s Montpellier laboratory in France as the lead DB2 performance specialist on a large internal IBM DB2 Data Sharing performance benchmark. This project identified and removed various bottlenecks which limited the number of concurrent users that could be supported in a Data Sharing Group. Mike’s role included optimising the physical database design and monitoring and tuning the DB2 subsystems and the DB2 CF structures. Various configurations were used up to an 8-member DB2 Data Sharing Group.

DB2 UDB for Linux/UNIX/Windows Experience

Mike has been working with DB2 UDB in the Linux, UNIX, and Windows environment since 2001. He installed and configured DB2 UDB on Linux running on a System/390 mainframe for the Government of Kenya. Mike also provided training in DB2 UDB system administration and programming. He has also presented DB2 UDB system administration and programming courses in Europe.
